Guest Speakers & Resource Persons - Hands-on Training cum Workshop on Basic Techniques in Animal Handling & Research - 22.11.2022 / by Anatomy SDC

Department of Anatomy & BRULAC, Saveetha Dental College has organized a one day workshop on “Hands-on Training cum Workshop on Basic Techniques in Animal Handling & Research” on 22nd November, 2022. The session started after registration of all the participants. The inaugural function was moderated by 3rd Year B.Sc Students, Ms. M. Bhavadharini and Ms. Blessy Gifta. The Inauguration function commenced with the invocation song “Tamil Thai Vazhthu”. Glimpses of Animal House Facility were showcased on-screen as a small video to the august gathering. The Welcome Address was delivered by Dr. K. Yuvaraj Babu, Associate Professor, Department of Anatomy. Event Report was given by Dr. Lavanya Prathap, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Anatomy. The guests were addressed by Dr. Sheeja Varghese, Registrar (Academics), SIMATS, Dr. Aravind Kumar, Dean, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals and Dr. M. Raman, Professor & Senior Veterinarian, Department of Microbiology, SDC. The session concluded with the Vote of Thanks by Dr. M. Karthik Ganesh, Assistant Professor & Scientist, Department of Anatomy.  The inaugural function ended with “National Anthem”.

The scientific lecture session had 4 separate lectures. The first lecture was given by Dr. M. Karthik Ganesh, Assistant Professor & Scientist, Department of Anatomy & BRULAC, SDC on the topic “In Vivo Animal Experimentation in Biomedical Research”. The talk was very informative to the research aspirants which contained many experimental and surgical photos which turned out to be a visual treat to the participants. The 2nd lecture was on “Experimental Drug Targets in Rats and Mice with respect to Human Biology by Dr. K. Meenakshi Sundaram, Assistant Professor & Research Scientist, BRULAC. The participants received good insights in various animal experimentation modalities and got clarified with several research queries with the Scientist. The 3rd session was an online International webinar on “Three R’s of Human Animal Experimentation” given by Dr. T.S. Mohamed Saleem, Assistant Professor - Pharmacology, College of Pharmacy, Riyadh ELM University, Riyadh-KSA. The talk highlighted the 3 R’s, ethical concerns, humane end points, etc., of experimentation in human and animal research. The final session was delivered by Dr. M. Raman, Professor & Senior Veterinarian, Department of Microbiology, SDC on the topic “Laboratory Animal Diseases and Diagnosis”. Professor briefed on all major zoonosis of animal origin and basic infections and diseases in animals for research and in Animal House Facility. He also explained in detail about various national and international fellowships, PDF schemes available for researchers.

After the lecture session the entire participants were divided into 4 batches and made to visit the animal house facility batch by batch. Dr. K. Yuvaraj Babu, Dr. M. Karthik Ganesh, Dr. K. Meenakshi Sundaram and Dr. G. Mydhili co-ordinated and trained each batch separately. Then all the 4 batches were taught with mice, rat and rabbit handling. All the oral gavage, various modes of injections, etc., were trained hands-on with volunteered participants. Blood collection modes were demonstrated in common for all. Finally the animals were euthanized and all the organ collection was demonstrated in Wistar rats as per approved protocol and CPCSEA guidelines. The hands-on session ended with overwhelming positive feedbacks from all the participants including faculties, research scholars and students of institutions inside and outside of our college.
